CHAPTER LEVEL PRIZES FOR STUDENTS

1. Alliance Française de Chicago Scholarship
Every year, funds permitting, the Alliance Française de Chicago awards a limited number (2-3) of scholarships to deserving high school SENIORS from the Chicago area.  The scholarship usually provides round-trip air transportation, tuition for a language and civilization course and a stipend for living expenses for a five-week stay in France.  The Committee selects the candidates from among those who have achieved high recognition in levels 4 or 5 in the Contest of the same year.  In addition, a FINALIST MUST BE 18 YEARS OLD, be a permanent resident of the US, not have a native French-speaking parent, and not have lived a significant amount of time in a French-speaking country.  Qualified candidates will be interviewed by the Alliance Française Scholarship Committee, which considers qualities such as:  competence in French, demonstrated interest in French culture, future goals and aspirations, ability to cope independently, enthusiasm and appropriate social skills, and perhaps the most important, the extent to which the candidate would profit by the award in the judgment of the Committee.

2. Presidents’ Award

Funds permitting, this award goes to high scoring SENIORS in levels 4 or 5, who plan to continue to study French after graduation from high school.  The Contest Committee will select the winners whose award will be $100-200.

3. Swiss Benevolent Society Award
This award usually goes to a high scoring Level 3 student.  The SBS provides full tuition to attend a two-week summer camp session at one of the many Concordia Language Village sites.  The Contest Committee will select the winner.  In the past 10 years, the Contest committee has been able to pay for the award-winner’s transportation costs from Chicago to Minnesota and back—up to $350 upon receipt of the boarding passes.  In 2015, our SBS Award winner was Alexander Geubelle from University Lab School, Urbana, Illinois.  His teacher is Lynda Lopez.  Our sincerest thanks once again to the SBS for their generous actions to promote foreign language learning.

4. T-shirt Design Award
The Contest Committee selects from among those students who submit a design for the French Contest T-shirt.  The talented winner receives $100 and T-shirts for his/her immediate family members.  See the flyer on our web site for more information.

5. Other prizes:
In addition to the above awards, National and Chapter winners receive an assortment of prizes SUCH AS:  certificates, pins/medals, French books, folders, French candies, Barnes & Noble gift certificates to be determined by rank/percentile.

FOR STUDENTS WHO DO NOT PLACE AS NATIONAL OR CHAPTER WINNERS:

1.  NFC Award Pins will be given to schools based on the number of registered test takers:  1 for every 4 registrants.

2.  Barnes & Noble Gift cards for $10-15 will be given to each school based on the number of registrants:  1 card for every 20 students registered.

It will be up to individual teachers to determine which students are to receive these ‘consolation’ awards.

CERTIFICATES
